Regardless of intent, a system was put into place that ensured that most of the profits were reaped by the wealthy and any possibility of advancement was capped for everyone else. This more or less stayed the same until the post-WWII era when some companies started to move more advanced manufacturing to take advantage of the lower costs. With the buildout of the interstate system, cost of transportation was cut dramatically and that led to a boom in industrialization starting in the 1950s and peaking in the mid-1970s. At that point, it all depended on what the wealthy families in the various states wanted. Those that liked being big frogs in a little pond, blocked attempts to attract manufacturing and later tech, those states stayed poor. Those who wanted to be a bigger frog in a much bigger pond didn't fight as much and even encouraged the new developments and those states did very well. Or at least better.

It amazes me the absolute control certain families have in some states. Its not uncommon for certain families to control a particular city but this state wide control is pretty surprising. I suspect it has to do with political and economic systems that are pretty much closed to the outside world.

Interesting story by a reporter I read last week.............there is a Grand Dragon of the KKK who lives near Ole Miss. He advertises his position on Facebook. Across the street, a black family lives. Apparently, the wife of the GD is friendly with the wife of the black family. The black wife had no clue that her friend's husband was a GD and flipped out when she found out from the reporter. I don't understand how that's possible.

God. I'm going to have to puke. One second.

Now, okay, I'm back.

Yes, little boy, in America some people make more money than others. Always have. The Framers of the Constitution wanted it that way. You remember, all that talk about the "fruits of his industry?"

They recognized that some people work harder than others. Some are just luckier than others. Some work hard all their lives and have no liquid assets until they die, so they can leave it to their heirs to do with it as they will.

And those who don't like that system should just stay in England. Or move to Canada. Whatever. Don't come here. Because that equality shit pulls a country down, like you wimps are trying to do now.

The fact remains that the South continues to suffer from the disruption of its entire economic system.

The bright spots in the southern economies are great companies like Walmart which have broken out of the mold and gone on to bring wealth to the states. And that is a good thing, no matter how badly the financially broke northern and West Coast states want our money.
