Thank Mike and Josh, think I'll go for the dual boot approach as i do have some older software I may want to run. While initially going on a test computer I may just like it enough to use regularly. Haven't ever set up a dual boot so many be coming back for help.

The disc has no license (because they are unique to the computer and the disc is generic). The license is created from the key and is a digital certificate that will be installed on the target machine when installed. PMSWitch has posted some utilities to allow one to backup and restore the license credentials for repair/reinstallation.

With new computers like Toshiba and other you never get a Windows 7 disc. You get to make rescue media, and its not a Windows 7 disc, just rescue media to put your computer back to out of box state. You can make the rescue media on DVD or Flash Drive.

The thing that looks like this HF0DA-FF086-VZ739-AA87H-236M4 is your Product Key and essentially your license. That code is what you want to keep track of. For those buying new computers it is on a sticker on your computer, or on a sticker somewhere in the documentation that came with it.
