Large portions of Western Europe have no retail pipe network to supply homes and businesses with natural gas. The most extensive natural gas distribution networks exist in former communist nations which were supplied by Russia and continue to use Russian supply.

And a large percentage of what we transport with long-haul trucks in America is transported by electrified rail in Europe due to more timely transit, something which US rail companies have never been able or interested in providing, largely due to the poor roadbed quality which necessitates low speeds.

Living in the western United States you could easily get the impression that everyone cooks on gas stoves and uses natural gas hot water heaters. Even though electricity is far more costly than natural gas, many around the world don't have a choice - and that includes large portions of the eastern US.
