Justa,

Thanks. You're probably right, when it's time to make the switch, the S&P would be equally unattractive.

I'm generally adverse to carrying any margin; but perhaps, I should consider buying semis low on margin, then paying off the margin loan when high keeping the difference as a core holding...

Is there a major flaw to that approach besides the margin interest and the risk that prices will continue to go lower after my margin purchase?

Ian.

RE: "Abby Joseph Cohen, who has been dead on in her analysis of this bull market, sees 8% growth in S & P earnings. The analysts are just getting around to gauging the effect of an SEA slowdown on the S & P ..."

Bob Brinker recently lowered his estimate on S&P 500 earnings growth in 1998 to 4%.

For what it's worth,

Re:I don't think you can buy the Russell 2000 on the exchange for small cap exposure although Vanguard has an index fund which tracks the same.

Vanguard does have a small stock index fund which replicates to Russell 2000. However, in addition to the .20 fee to run the fund, there is a 1% fee charged for every dollar so using this to trade/hedge is probably(most definitely) not a good idea.
