As for your latter statement, the South adapted to the loss of slavery and cotton remained an important crop for a very long time.
With the invention of the cotton gin cotton production was increased tremendously and more slaves were needed to pick it.... The loss of slaves was going to cripple their economy....remember, there were about 4,000,000 slaves...the population of the Confederacy was 9,000,000.. Cotton picking machines didn't become successful until 1944....

Did you know that at one time, Natchez MS had more millionaires than New York City? In 1850, Natchez had over 500 millionaires, half the millionaires in America.
Gonna check, but it that inflation adjusted? Natchez area had the best cotton growing conditions.
