I used to use APC battery backups until I ran into what appeared to be a bad batch of their products.

When you get the battery backup home, bring the battery to a full charge, then plug a light into the UPS , turn the light on and then unplug the UPS. The light should stay on as the UPS switches from external power to battery power.

I exchanged 3 new APC battery backups that failed this simple test.
