You're exaggerating for effect

All other things being equal, an integrated solution will be preferred. But all other things are not always equal and no one company or group of companies will ever have a "lock" on innovation.

As has been stated repeatedly, just because MSFT puts browser functionality in Windows doesn't mean you can't use other programs that either duplicate or extend that functionality if you choose to do so. Nothing is stopping any of us from running Navigator or any other browser. BTW, I've been playing with Opera from operasoftware.com and it has some very nice features. Those who perceive that the one-upsmanship waged between Navigator and IE has resulted in two bloated products will appreciate what a lean browsing client can do.
