>>Allen, its good to here that faster processors running Win95 can handle RecordIt without hiccups. My Mac has a 604 processor running at 120MHz (PPC8500) and I have 48 megs of RAM. Maybe I'll try fooling around with memory allocation.<<

Brian -

Let me know how changing the memory settings affects the problem. I'm betting that it won't.

I've thought about this. The biggest bottleneck in your case sounds like it's the serial connection to your modem. Serial ports generate an interrupt request for each bit that either comes in or out. That's why clicking the "next" button on SI interrupts the stream of music. Because the processor has to stop what it's doing (decoding the Recordit data stream) and service the interrupts for the serial port to receive a bunch of new data from SI.

Sorry if this is stuff you already know.

If this is what's causing your problem, and I think it is, then the only thing that would help would be a much faster processor. It's possible that your machine could be upgraded to a 604E running at 200MHz, for about $350. But that's a high price to pay, unless you would like to have faster performance overall.

If you know someone who's a serious Mac guru, you could ask whether using a different modem which takes advantage of the Geoport might improve serial performance. I know the Geoport is supposed to be some kind of super serial port, but I don't know much about it.
