Methinks the point is moot. I have often seen Brad or Jeff's profiles showing x number of new messages, when in fact there are none. If fact, I have seen them create a new message (and threads) only to have it be deleted minutes later.

The fact that messages are deleted doesn't affect the sequential database record number, even if they do decrement the ordinal (thread/sequence) numbering. So, the post in question is record #3,000,000 in the message database, for whatever that dubious distinction is worth. (Dubious since I had the post immediately preceeding and following it.) :- /
