ÿ ÿ ÿAndrew Grove, chairman and CEO of Intel, is "Time" magazine's "Man of the Year" for 1997. Time calls Grove the person most responsible for the power and innovative potential of microchips. ÿ
ÿ ÿ ÿ

ÿ ÿ ÿ ÿTHEY'VE FUELED the growth of a new economy, much like the steam engine, electricity and the assembly line did in an earlier age.
ÿ ÿ ÿ ÿGrove, 61, escaped Holocaust Germany, trained as a scientist and started at Intel when it was first founded in 1968. He went on to shape the company, which now makes microprocessors for 90 percent of the world's IBM-compatible computers, the magazine said.
ÿ ÿ ÿ ÿ"The story that had the most impact on 1997 was the one that had the most impact throughout the decade: the growth of a new economy ... that has been propelled by the power of the microchip," the magazine said.
ÿ ÿ ÿ ÿAccording to Time Magazine managing editor Walter Isaacson, the "high-tech industry" was responsible for less than 10 percent of America's growth in 1990 but now accounts for 30 percent of that growth.
ÿ ÿ ÿ ÿFor the last 10 years, Intel has offered investors an average annualized total return of 44 percent.
ÿ ÿ ÿ ÿ"I am honored to be chosen as Time's "Man of the Year" - doubly honored because the context is information technology," Grove said in a statement.
ÿ ÿ ÿ ÿGrove was born in 1936 in Budapest. He suffered partial hearing loss because of scarlet fever and has been treated for prostate cancer. He is married, with two children, and has an estimated worth of more than $300 million, Time said.
ÿ ÿ ÿ ÿThe "Man of the Year" award has been a tradition since 1927 when the magazine first gave the designation to Charles Lindbergh.
