Hello Lawrence, > Hello Scott, Apparently NT at Schwab Brokerage continually crashes. Oh yes ... NT crashes ... On a recent trip to Atlanta I saw some Internet kiosks in the baggage claim area ... I had to take a digital photo because two of the three kiosks were sitting at a blue screen! Microsoft is creating a whole new market for products which will automatically re-boot machines! ;-) > Recently, I was at Charles Schwab and pulled up a couple of > different screens on the computer from which customers access info. > After I crashed both machines in the lobby, I asked what network > system they were using. Don't any or > lots of these people want to replace their NT OS? Just like I'd > like to replace my MS 95? Most people are not looking to replace Windows since the majority of their application are written to the proprietary Windows APIs. They are actually "trapped" and can not even choose to migrate. In today's world, I don't believe that there is any other desktop solution that can replace Windows. That is why Sun, IBM, Novell, and others are working so hard to create the Java/CORBA alternative. If there was a cost-effective, realiable solution then many customers would move their applications to it ... even if they continued to run these Java/CORBA apps on Windows. It's the fact that this opens the opportunity for them to choose ... something they just don't have today. Also, if anyone finds a company with a focus on Java libraries that read and write all of the "standard" file formats (such as Word, Excel, Wordperfect, etc.) I'd love to hear about it ... I think this is a key requirement to success ... transparent access to legacy data. > NOTE: I am not a tech and I could have mispercieved what happened > at Schwab, but this is what it appeared to be: NT. My opinion only. There are problems ... my NT server here blue screens about twice a week. My netware servers have been up for over a month non-stop since they were shutdown for a planned move. > Thanks Scott. I appreciate your info. I hope it helps ... or provides an alternative viewpoint ... ;-) > Lawrence Scott C. Lemon
