How about the liberal state ... adolescence? The growing young person is resentful and rebellious of authority - parents, school authorities, law enforcement, God, religious figures - and is obsessed with restrictions placed on his liberty. Usually the adolescent matures into adulthood, learns to live with society's laws and still establish himself / herself as an independent adult in charge of oneself. But sometimes that maturing process is arrested and the individual carries the immature resentments into chronological adulthood and even old age.
