slarrow August 01, 2015 5:14 PM Atheists make this mistake all the time. They think they can borrow wholesale the moral precepts from Christianity while denying its foundational truths. Christopher Hitchens was especially bad (and dishonest) on this front. He always pretended that his opponents were claiming that atheists couldn't be moral. They can, but they have to steal their moral precepts and can't ground them on their own principles. Ultimately, they have little more than sentiment and indignation to bolster their beliefs. That works in English and journalism classes, sadly, but an elementary logic course should rip them to shreds.

This is another manifestation of what I've seen referred to as the "cut flowers thesis." This quote from Tolstoy describes it thusly:

"The attempts to found a morality apart from religion are like the attempts of children who, wishing to transplant a flower that pleases them, pluck it from the roots that seem to them unpleasing and superfluous, and stick it rootless into the ground. Without religion there can be no real, sincere morality, just as without roots there can be no real flower."

A bouquet of flowers is beautiful, but ultimately, it is dead.

"We're not eating little girls yet, but we're already parting them out and selling them for profit. The post-Christian trend is clear. The abomination of Planned Parenthood is the sin and the horror of American society. It is the proof that God has turned His face away from the once-Christian America and ceased to bless her."

Maybe God is just washing his face? Maybe taking a bath??

And just WHAT is the matter with the Repubs??? They had a chance to run for President, and they have blown it by insulting the intelligence of all Americans in this stupid (and unwinnable) war they are waging against women. Trying to pretend that they are fighting against the “trafficking” of fetal tissue (too funny!) rather than what they are so obviously doing (attacking the legality of abortion and the rights of women)…is just too insulting for Americans of either gender. Nobody can respect or stomach such maliciousness, such phoniness, such duplicity--and such calculating immorality and pretentious showmanship. They are done like Sunday turkey! Too bad because some of them had some decent ideas.

What were they thinking? Attacking all the caring, compassionate, and necessary health care provided by Planned Parenthood would only increase the abortion rate across the board. You don’t prevent unwanted pregnancies by denying contraceptives! How DUMB! So all their misrepresentations and fear-mongering goes for naught--even if they could sell the Big Lie!

Any candidate who continues this phoney charade they are engaging will simply deserve the utterly cold shoulder with which the electorate will reward their malicious lies and misrepresentations. These Christian Fundies with their reprehensible fabrications and hysterical language are really turning into a primitive sub-species of Homo Sapiens. They are demonising Planned Parenthood and health care for women the way the Nazis demonised Jews and Gays. Which is the very reason that no sane voter will assist them into positions of power. The Repubs need to re-work their ‘strategy’ and develop a moral base that attracts ordinary men and women. Decent people are rightly offended by their Drama Queen pretentiousness and reprehensible lies.
