I've seen this problem as moderator quite a bit. Certain people lack the ability to argue on merits. These individuals turn to crude attacks. The more well sourced, compelling data and argument you offer them, the more childlike and crude they become. On this board, this group consists almost exclusively of right wing conservatives. The conversation is always redirected to a childlike attack on the source of the data, a claim of partisanship or imbalance, some dismissive and insulting claim of bias, or science denial. But more often than not, members of this far right contingent dispense with this; the response is a post consisting of no more than personal insults against the original poster, replete with the developing foul language tools of a tween. It repels most people, which is good, IMO. Reading the posts to most shows them just for what they are, thoughtless partisans.
