I too believe in meaningful drive and partition names.

One thing is for sure with what I am witnessing and that is my old Win7's version of chkdsk does not like OS volumes of Win-8.0 and forward and Microsoft is definitely doing something different. I strongly suspect what is happening is directly related to the hidden "System Reserved" partition and my understanding of what you are describing supports that.

That said, I'm hoping I'll have fewer problems using separate disks rather than multiple partitions to boot multiple operating systems.

I have a quad-boot drive now running Win10--8.1--8.0--7.

Also the booted OS is now always on C: and the optical drive is always on D:.

Had better luck putting Window 10 at the beginning of the drive and I'm also using EasyBCD.

The oddball OS drive letters were a problem though and it was just a matter of time before they would cause trouble.

Important Solution for CHKDSK problem dual-booting Windows 10 and 7.

A problem for dual-booters is that Windows 7 wants to run CHKDSK on the Windows 10 disk or partition.

This is caused by "Fast Startup" in Windows 10 and the solution is to turn "Fast Startup" off in Windows 10 so it doesn't make entries on a drive that Windows 7 doesn't understand.
