Possibly because they seem to live in an echo chamber with only conformist opinions allowed. As with all people they were told they were smart as children but they decided they didn't need to learn anything else. So they constantly repeat each others voices.

They believe they are progressive, but in fact they are resistant to change. That is what makes them vulnerable in this ever changing world.
