National economy developing steadily

CHINA'S economy continues to soar, rising steadily last month in what has been a year-long trend.

The State Statistics Bureau (SSB) released the latest national economic figures, for November, in Beijing yesterday.

Enterprises' value-added output, above the township level, reached 188.4 billion yuan (US$22.7 billion) in November, up 11.6 per cent from the same period last year. Value-added output of State-owned firms, and firms in which the State holds a majority stake, was 105.6 billion yuan (US$12.7 billion) in November, up 7.7 per cent.

The growth rate was 0.8 per cent higher than the previous month, the report said.

However, production of energy, some raw materials, machinery and electronics items dropped, the report indicated.

"Investment in fixed assets rose steadily," the report said, accumulating to 1,220 billion yuan (US$147 billion), up 12.3 per cent.

The consumer goods market remained stable and prosperous, the report said.

Retail sales of consumer goods rose to 245.5 billion yuan (US$29.6 billion) in November, up 11.7 per cent.

Retail sales of consumer goods in rural areas climbed 12.4 per cent, reaching 97.9 billion yuan (US$11.8 billion) in November.
