That's what stands out to me also, but don't know if the cylinders have a purpose or if it's only a different manufacturing technique. However the cable sold by Newegg with the cylinders also seems to have thicker insulation and appears better constructed.

The cylinders on each end of the cord?

The 'cylinders' are just ferrite cores to reduce emitted noise. They help to reduce issues with poorly sent signals from some devices.
