Dale, the words were said, but in a different context, and by an analyst who was not particularly articulate. My first impression was he said that if IOM began selling Zips to OEMs at $50 apiece, (sometime in 1998) then they would be taking a $10-12 loss on them, but make up for it in disk sales. But this person was so nervous that he had made a few egregious errors before that, and I decided I could not be sure he wasn't trying to say something entirely different. I wasn't even sure he really meant Zip and not Sony's HiFud. All in all, I would not worry about it. Trust BO to spin it in the worst possible way. A way I do not think the analyst could possibly have meant. He was talking about the future, not now. Please take the 45 minutes to listen to it, as I don't think the transcripts could do justice to it. I am interested in your interpretation to exactly the same degree I am disinterested in BO's.

RE: OEM Drive Prices Below Cost?

Dale,

>> Did Iomega actually say this? This seems absolutely incredible to me. Could someone possibly elaborate on exactly what was said regarding OEM pricing? <<

Iomega didn't say it--one of the analysts did. His model assumes that Iomega sells OEM drives below cost. Whether that's the case or not, who knows (or cares?)? Iomega has said in the past (during a conference call) that they won't sell anything below cost.

Iomega did not say this. An analyst said this.

Does Iomega really lose money on each OEM Zip drive sold?

I suppose if Iomega really wanted to make a strong push to accelerate the standardization process of the Zip drive, they could sell the OEM drives at a loss and make up for it on disk sales.

But this doesn't make any sense when you consider that both NEC and Matsushita have been or will be manufacturing ZIP drives for use in their own computers as well as for sale to other OEMs. The only reason they would be doing this is because there is money to be made on the drives. (Anyone disagree?)

Now, I suppose someone might try to argue that NEC and Matsushita can manufacture OEM Zip drives for less than Iomega so they make a profit while Iomega loses money. Well, great. Let them manufacture and sell all the OEM Zip drives they want. Let them have all the profit from the OEM Zip drives. Because in my perfect world, Iomega would only make and sell Zip disks.
