Taiwanese investment in mainland dives

AGENCE FRANCE-PRESSE
Taiwan's contracted investment in China fell 54 per cent in the first nine months this year.

Contracted investments were US$2 billion in the period, with the number of projects approved by mainland authorities falling 9.1 per cent to 2,181, Xinhua said, quoting a Ministry of Foreign Trade and Economic Co-operation official.

Actual investments over the period rose 0.49 per cent to $2.49 billion, while, in the first 10 months, contracted foreign investment rose 29 per cent.

The drop in Taiwanese capital was nearly twice that of all foreign investments.

The fall was linked to the "Taiwanese authorities' present policy on trade and economic ties across the Straits", the Moftec official said.

"It has deprived Taiwanese entrepreneurs of business opportunities on the mainland," he said.

Taiwanese President Lee Teng-hui has been slow to liberalise rules over the island's investment on the mainland in an effort to reduce Taipei's economic dependence on Beijing.

According to a study published on Wednesday, more than half of all Taiwanese investors working in China wanted to move to other countries, saying the mainland had become "too risky".
