I have never understood why short term trading and long term investing are mutually exclusive.

Even best of breed stocks get ahead of themselves which is usually followed by an over-correction. Why just watch these swings instead of trading them and thus either reducing the average cost or preserving capital?

Similarly with trends ... If a market trend goes against you / your convictions / your beliefs, what's the point in fighting it?

Just look at the oil and gold gurus. They were so busy arguing with the market / coming up with a million reasons as to why the trend is wrong and can't possibly continue, they completely forgot to hit the sell button and are now sitting on losses which will take years to recover if ever.

BTW, oil was the major reason why I scaled back on microcaps. On the retail side, oil is mostly high risk money. Once high risk money gets burned, it usually goes to the sidelines at least for a while which is one of the reasons why we have seen so little buying support in microcaps.
