In thinking back over this Windows 10 experience, I'm certain I was the cause of my problems. I would walk away from the machine while it did its thing. As it suggested "Sit back and relax" and I did that. In the process some 2 hours into all of it I must have missed a prompt telling me to restart the machine. Not responding to that command, the machine just went dark and nothing I knew to do, worked. After sleeping on it, it occurred to me that maybe I should just reboot the thing. Sure enough, that's about all it took.

I managed to mess with some of the settings I wasn't sure of and caused more frustrating problems which took a couple hours to resolve. As usual, it always came back to pilot error. Except for some colors not being what I remember, everything seems to be working great. I think I notice a bit faster machine and so far all the links I've tried, as well as dumping to the printer, all seem fine.

Now that I'm a bit more experienced, I'm gonna try all this on the laptop later today.
