Plutonic ,Homestake to hold news conference

PERTH, Dec 22 (Reuters) - Gold mining companies Plutonic Resources Ltd and Homestake Mining Co (NYSE:HM - news; NYSE:HMN - news; HSM.AX) have scheduled a news conference in Sydney later on Monday to be attended by senior executives from both companies, a public relations firm said on Monday.

Sources in New York late on Sunday said the two companies were on the verge of announcing Plutonic was to be acquired by Homestake.

The news conference is scheduled for 3.15 p.m. Sydney time (0415 GMT) and would be attended by Plutonic chairman Paul McClintock and Homestake vice president Dick Tastula, the public relations firm said in an announcement.

Plutonic is Australia's third-largest gold producer, operating five mines. Malaysian Mining Corp Bhd (MMCB.KL) owns about 34 percent of Plutonic.

Homestake was formed to develop the Homestake gold mine in the U.S., discovered in 1876.

Homestake owns major-sized gold mines in the U.S., Canada, Australia and Chile and also has gold interests in Venezuela and Bulagaria.
