South Korea Doubles Bank Debt Guarantees to $20 Billion

The South Korean government pledged Saturday to guarantee as much as $20 billion in foreign currency debt owed by commercial banks, doubling a $10 billion commitment made Friday. The government needs to convince foreign banks to renew loans to their Korean counterparts to prevent defaults and the spread of bankruptcies. Korean stocks, which trade for a half day on Saturdays, rose, with the Kospi index up 3.17 points, or 0.8 percent, to 400.19
