The Wire writer got it, but ran away from it

Loved the show, but it was so frustrating to watch his school solution. He had been a Baltimore School Teacher and Newspaper reporter. He saw the problem perfectly, but could not face the reality of the solution. You not only kick them out of school, you should let kids quit at 14 and work.

My youngest hated school, quit at 15 and left town. He finally joined the Navy and never got in real trouble that I know of.

You kick them out of school and don't let them work, what do you expect them to do? It's tough enough to be interested in STEM if you have a 100 IQ. No way with an 88 one. The Military cutoff for OCS is a 120 IQ, At least it was when I joined in 53. It was the same for Rangers during WWII. We had Ranger line troops that should have been leading Platoons as 2nd Lieutenants who were privates going into Omaha.

Of course, the up side of that was that those Ranger line troops ending up saving Omaha beach.

Similar thing happened at the Battle of the Bulge. Col Peiper, the German commander, was cussing our Engineers as his worst enemy. They fought the best against him. Again, higher IQ.

The College testing we do really ID's kids who are 120 IQ and above. We have shoved more kids though college by lowering testing standards.
