Christmass Selling - I've noticed that HP computers are now on sale for roughly $100 off, as of today's news paper ads. Compaq computers are still selling at the same price as Nov. This indicates that HP has not sold well and has an inventory problem IMHO. I think Compaq is having a major, major quarter and is beating the pants off of the competition.

I hope compaq doesn't buy Gateway. Compaq's new system of approved retailers removes the need for a direct sales force. Compaq already has the direct sales it needs to companies - selling to individuals directly has more overhead that to corporations.

Dan, I was reading the other day in some magazine that CPQ and IBM will soon be marketing their products through the net, sort of like DELL. I also read somewhere here on this thread about some fellow trying to buy a CPQ via the Net and he couldn't do it so he decided to buy a DELL. So if CPQ's intention is also to sell their products via the net, then buying GTW might be an idea worth considering as i think they do have a better handle on direct marketing than CPQ.

Remember CPQ also recently announced that they are going to reduce the number of thier Channels from +3000 or so to 200-400 or something like that, perhaps one of the reasons they are doing this is due to the fact that they intend to sell a major portion of the consumer/retail business via the net.
