I just found an illustration on WeatherBell (by Ryan Maue) on the 2-m temperature for initializing the NCEP Climate Forecast System Renalysis Model. A lovely snapshot. I know you know this, but I'll just reiterate for others that weather models must be initialized properly. Thus, you can hang your hat on these temperatures being accurate and unfudged.

Here's a plot of the global average the past 10 years. Looks like a downtrend to me. If only it went back further, but alas. The world-averaged anomaly actually went negative in July...adding to the outlandish claim of July 2015 being the hottest ever. WeatherBell is a great team to follow.
