Phbolton, I agree, AVNT has every incentive to settle. In fact, if I recall correctly, AVNT and CDN did settle an earlier piece of litigation. My guess is that CDN smells blood this time, and there is no amount of money that will satisfy them. They want to eliminate a competitor. I think they will succeed. (and in this case, if the facts are as represented in the pleadings I think they should succeed, since AVNT's entire business is built on stolen code).
It is always important to remember, though, that you never get all the facts from the media, and one cannot really make a fully informed judgement from those facts. This is only my best guess. Good Luck
