Police in Boston say the man was targeted because he is Hispanic. One of the brothers said he was inspired by Donald Trump . The victim told police he was awakened by two men urinating on his face. He said they ripped away his blankets and sleeping bag and started rummaging through his things. “Next thing . . . he was getting hit in the face and head,” according to the State Police report. “He remembers being punched several times and hit with the metal pole.” The brothers, Scott and Steve Leader walked away from the scene laughing, a witness said. And here’s where Trump comes in: According to the Boston Globe , police said Scott Leader, 38, told them it was OK to assault the man because he was Hispanic and homeless. “Donald Trump was right, all these illegals need to be deported,” he told the police. Witnesses told police they saw the men attack the homeless man. One woman said she saw him hunched over and clutching the pole, apparently to defend himself, according to the report. She told police one of the suspects grabbed the pole and struck him three or four times, including in the head. This is what we can expect when politicians and reality TV personalities start spewing xenophobic vitriol. Let’s not forget that during his campaign announcement speech, Trump made the ridiculous claim that Mexican immigrants are criminals, saying they are “bringing drugs. They’re bringing crime. They’re rapists.” Recently Trump has suggested that he wants to end birthright citizenship, a right guaranteed by the 14th amendment. Scott Walker, Jeb Bush, Bobby Jindal, and Marco Rubio have all managed to agree with Trump and sing the same song agreeing with this outright racist policy. When Trump was told about the attack, he said, “It would be a shame . . . I will say that people who are following me are very passionate. They love this country and they want this country to be great again. They are passionate.” Passionate? Urinating on another human being and beating them might pass as passion in a New York City sex dungeon between two consenting adults, but on a city street it’s a violent criminal act, and Trump should be ashamed of the blasé response he gave – we should all be ashamed. It would apparently be too far of a reach to expect a narcissist like Trump to take responsibility for anything he has clearly been party to. Far be it from him to see this as a sign to tone down the rhetoric. After all, as Scott Leader told police, “Donald Trump was right.” This incident should come as a shock to no one. When people hear a presidential candidate calling undocumented immigrants “rapists” and suggesting that children born here should be kicked out of the country, it has an impact. It says to people like the Leader brothers that a man sleeping on the streets is less than they are, less than human. The Republican Party claims to be the party of America. It would be nice if they started acting like it. Unfortunately, you cannot hear the question in the video below. However, The Boston Globe reported (and the Trump campaign did not dispute the claim) that Trump’s response is about the assault.
