fonix(TM) Board Endorses Strategic Direction

SALT LAKE CITY, Dec. 22 /PRNewswire/ -- fonix(TM) corporation, (Nasdaq: FONX) Chairman and CEO, Stephen M. Studdert, said today that at its recent regularly scheduled quarterly meeting, the fonix board of directors unanimously endorsed management's business plan for accelerating revenue through strategic alliances and other internal and external corporate opportunities. Studdert said that, with its initial patent having issued this this year and the fundamental technology architecture in place, the company is positioned to grow, not only through such strategic alliances as the recently announced agreements with Siemens Semiconductor Group and the Center for Spoken Language Understanding, but also through acquiring or interfacing with complementary technologies.

"Despite recent overall weakness in the stock market and especially in the Nasdaq-traded high-tech companies, the board of directors is more enthusiastic than ever about the potential of the fonix technologies and management's commitment to growth," said John A. Oberteuffer, Ph.D., noted automatic speech recognition (ASR) expert and director of fonix corporation. "We are confident that the company's strategic alliance with Siemens represents the first of many opportunities in the consolidating ASR market," he said.

Studdert reaffirmed that notwithstanding the downward pressure on the price of the company's common stock -- which has recently experienced short- selling and year-end selling pressures -- the company's core fundamentals are strong. "Our relationship with Siemens is moving forward, and fonix expects to begin work with Siemens Semiconductor Group under the authority of its first Statement of Work during the week of January 12," said Studdert. "As managers and as shareholders, we are encouraged that interest in fonix speech recognition technologies is gaining momentum worldwide," said Studdert. "We are identifying additional opportunities, even as we continue to work energetically toward finalizing documentation for this first revenue- generating agreement," Studdert said.

fonix corporation, a development-stage company, produces proprietary automatic speech recognition (ASR) technologies based on the human auditory model. Together with proprietary neural networks (artificial intelligence), the fonix technologies provide enhanced multimodal human/computer interfaces. fonix, the next generation ASR using specific-speech knowledge, proprietary speech modeling, and a linguistic-contextual neural network, is designed to recognize speech at natural speaking rates. As a technology provider, fonix will license or integrate its proprietary speech recognition technologies, through strategic alliances, joint ventures and co-development efforts, for use in computer devices for the Internet, commercial, professional, and industrial markets.

Dr. White,

<< did anyone feel like they were led to believe there would be revenues from the Siemens deal yet in 97? I sure didn't get that impression, but maybe I missed something.>>

There was an article in the SLTribune dated 11-19-97

''We expect to be able to book a minimum of $2 million in revenue this quarter,'' said fonix President Thomas Murdock.
He says those funds will come into the company as prepaid royalties or from purchases of fonix stock by Siemens at market rates.

Murdock said he expects Siemens to begin using fonix voice recognition technology on computer chips used in its telecommunications products by June. That would pave the way for the fonix to begin receiving recurring royalty income, he said.
