The car analogy goes only so far but I will try.
The "engine" is more like the operating system (or CPU ?:-)).
That is one of the basic choices you make when you choose
a car and you cannot replace it.
The browser is more like the audio you get with the car.
You may want better speakers. Or you may want a better tape
or CD player. You should be free to choose with your dealer
or aftermarket.

If Ford or GM start telling the dealers (well that is not
perfect since unfortunately cars manufacturers still have
stake in their dealers) to stop servicing a car or acknowledging
that it is a Ford or GM car if the customer chooses to have an
Alpine CD player instead of the Delco tape, that would be
the Microsoft vs OEMs analogy.
