Ayatollah Khameini is the Supreme Leader of Iran. He is commander in chief of the armed forces and appoints the heads of the judiciary and the heads of the national television and radio bureau. Iran has elections for President, the Majlis (their parliament) and other offices, but only candidates approved by a Council of Guardians are allowed to run. This council has veto rights over bills passed by the Majlis. The Supreme Leader appoints a majority of this council. In addition to being CINC of the army, the Supreme Leader has a separate 125K man fighting force in the Revolutionary Guard to prevent coups.
