Does the Quantum claim that being in the heads business benefits the disk drive business strike anyone as credible. Maxtor's ability to bring out 2.1 gigabyte per platter drives earlier than quantum would certainly seem to indicate if it is not essential to be in the heads business to produce a leading edge product. Also given the massive investment required to remain in the heads business, one can't help but wonder whether quantum would not be better off to sell their remaining interest and perhaps use the proceeds to repurchase shares at this bargain level. It would seem to be a opportunity to turn the money hole into in means of making a substantial repurchase of shares at a discount. Given Quantum's on going difficulty in producing heads, do we really want to see them invest in and attempt to produce GMR at a level below where economies of scale are realized?
