I think your scenario is as likely as anyone else's.

But the Japanese don't even have to sell bonds. All that's needed is that they not buy any more.

I keep wondering how long the US can go on supplying paper currency for the rest of the world--in effect exporting paper certificates in exchange for material products. Of course, we provide a valuable service just sitting here conducting our business honestly (more or less). We sure are good at consuming. Just look at the waistline of your average customer at MacDonalds--and at the amount of gasoline that his or her sports-utility vehicle burns up in a year.
