MILPITAS, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 22, 1997--Adaptec Inc. announced that its Fibre Channel-to-PCI host adapter, the AHA-F940, will be incorporated into Avid Technology's high-performance workgroup storage solution, MediaShare F/C(TM). The combination of Avid's and Adaptec's Fibre Channel technology for the Macintosh will enhance workgroup capabilities by allowing multiple digital video editors to access the same media simultaneously, thereby saving production time and cost. Fibre Channel technology is ideal for data intensive applications such as digital video editing because of its high speed (up to 1Gbit/sec throughput), scalability (connection of up to 126 devices on a single port), distance connection capability (from 30 meters over copper to 10 kilometers over optical cables), and ease of configuration. Also, Adaptec's Fibre Channel host adapter enables multi-initiator capabilities, meaning that workgroups can address tasks concurrently rather than sequentially. This allows Avid's MediaShare F/C solution to eliminate the need to postpone tasks, switch workstations, or physically move media. "We are excited that Avid incorporated Adaptec into its Fibre Channel solution," said Jean-Eric Garnier, business and marketing manager for Adaptec's Macintosh products. "This design win affirms our ongoing commitment to the support and development of I/O performance on MacOS computers." "Avid is a leader in professional digital video editing systems, and our consumers expect high performance and stability when working with this demanding application," said Dennis Hoffman, director of infrastructure product management for Avid. "We looked to Adaptec as a leader in system bandwidth solutions to bring these qualities to our Fibre Channel solution, and Adaptec's Fibre Channel host adapter offers industry-leading performance and widespread compatibility."
