The Supreme Leader runs the Revolutionary Guard, which btw is a military institution separate from the Iranian armed forces. It exists to prevent a coup.

NOTHING happens in Iran that the military doesn't approve of... Which military? There are two.

Doesn't it seem ODD to you that a Supreme Religious Person has so much power in Iran yet the society itself is rather liberal in dress and most other things? The ayatollah who is the Supreme Leader does indeed have so much power. Are there people who are liberal in dress and other things? Sure, but they're downtrodden. They don't even have any spokesmen. Besides preventing a coup, suppressing the people is another task delegated to the Revolutionary Guard.
