CSCO downgraded. Effect on ASND?
Sorry, I didn't get the analysts's name, but CSCO was downgraded to
a "market perform" by one of their analysts'. Saw it on CNBC this morning. Funny, though, the analyst didn't change earnings' expectations, so why downgrade?

Optus Communications' Worldwide ISP Backbone Goes Bay; Bay Networks to Provide High Capacity, Scalable Routers Business Wire - December 22, 1997 13:56 %BAY-NETWORKS BAY %CALIFORNIA %COMPUTERS %ELECTRONICS %COMED %TELECOMMUNICATIONS V%BW P%BW SANTA CLARA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 22, 1997--Bay Networks Inc., (NYSE:BAY) today announced that Optus Communications in Australia has selected Bay Networks Backbone Concentrator Node (BCN(TM)) routers for its worldwide Internet backbone. A major telecommunications carrier, Optus Communications has made strategic advances as an Internet carrier working with the AARNET education network and OzEmail, Australia's largest ISP. The BCN routers will be deployed at Optus Communications' offices in Sydney and Melbourne in Australia, and in Los Angeles and San Francisco in the U.S. The router backbone is designed to connect Internet Service Providers (ISPs) and high-volume customers to Optus Communications' Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) network and provide high-performance centralized router capabilities to both supplement the current network, as well as provide the platform for widespread Internet Protocol (IP) based service deployment. "This sale is a major win for Bay Networks in a number of ways," said Steve Rust, region director, Australia and New Zealand, Bay Networks. "It represents a large piece of business for us and gives us recognition at the highest level for our advanced technical and support capabilities that service the Internet market. With Optus being the carrier for OzEmail and AARNET, by the end of January we should see nearly half of the Internet traffic originating in Australia being routed through Bay Networks equipment," he added. When reviewing equipment for its Internet backbone, Optus Communications required IP routing equipment to provide high throughput and high availability IP routing in the core of its ATM network. According to Bill Hope, Optus' acting chief technical officer, the Bay Networks' BCN routers are being deployed as part of the core Optus ATM network and will be used to manage and route IP traffic for their commercial Internet services. "Optus has a need for high capacity, scalable core router equipment which can seamlessly internetwork with the national and international Optus ATM network. Bay Networks' BCN routers not only provide the scalability and reliability required in such an environment, they also offer high-performance ATM interoperability required to deliver very high bandwidth IP services," said Hope. "The Internet is a growing network, it grows every hour of every day; consequently the router designated as an Internet backbone router needs to not only handle the network traffic, but also store and process any changes to the network configuration in order to make intelligent routing decisions," said Rust. "The BCN router is ideal for this demanding environment." About Bay Networks BCN Routers The Bay Networks BCN router is the world's fastest, most reliable multi-protocol router -- and the only one with a fault tolerant multi-processor architecture. Mission critical networks have long depended on the BCN's high-performance hardware redundancy, software fault isolation, and broad range of LAN (Local Area Network) and WAN (Wide Area Network) interfaces. Its ability to provide security firewalls, multi-protocol routing, LAN segmentation, wide area connection to remote offices, and IBM SNA traffic integration has made it the industry's premier trading floor router.
