50 years ago, smog was awful and rivers caught fire. Then, in '67, Governor Raygun signed a clean air law, and, 3 years later, the US started Earth Day, followed by passed a bunch of clean air/clean water laws.
What's happened since then? Skies got cleaner, rivers got cleaner, and people got jobs. In my state,, we've used that '67 law to keep electricity consumption/person flat for 40 years, and to become the 7th largest economy in the world. It just takes willpower.
