Using LastPass ...

<< My "vault" shows sites I can't remember ever seeing before. >>

Not good. I seriously doubt, however, that LastPass put them there. Somehow it would appear the links got imported from a browser or stored file on one of your devices but that should not happen without the user initiating the import. I would fire off a message to LastPass support to inquire about that.

The User manual is available online and is also available in PDF Format and this is the download link: helpdesk.lastpass.com

<< I found nothing about the install or follow up instructions/information to be the least bit intuitive. >>

I would simply say that it is a very comprehensive Internet Security producr and while not not particularly cryptic (just a bit of a pun intended) full mastery requires an investment of exploration and Time.

LastPass has several LastPass quickies on YouTube.

I would personally recommend that neophyte users or prospective users view Leo Laportes 1 year old 30 minute intro to LastPass: youtube.com
