Reagan's military buildup played an important role in convincing the USSR it couldn't compete in an arms race and helped lead to the fall of Communism there. Obama's erosion of American military power has encouraged Putin to assert Russian power once again.

>>The F-35 program alone has already cost more than $400 Billion and will probably cost around $2 Trillion by the time it ends. <<

So far, the F-35 has proven to be not nearly as good as an F-16 as a fighter, nor as good as an A-10 as a ground support aircraft. These problems were caused by trying to build one plane that does everything, mostly by incorporating the Marines desire to have a VTOL aircraft to replace Harriers. They might actually be better than Harriers - the only success of the plane.

If we had to go to war with the thing, we'd keep them in the hangers so they wouldn't be shot down, because they're really expensive, while not being as good as enemy planes!

As a result, we'll probably keep making F-16's and A-10's, as well as F-35's. We can't really pull the plug on it, because of all the foreign partners that also have skin in the game.
