Paul, A same speed 486 and Pentium are intrinsically mismatched, and the Pentium will win. However similar 32 bit systems might be closer than you think. Since 95% of systems never have their CPU changed you can get the close coupled functionality of slot one by close use of parts on both sides of the motherboard. That means giving up an upgrade path, one that is rarely used. Successor systems to the pentium II might well increase the gulf, however the Alpha show that you can do it to the 500-600 Mhz area with conventional pathways.
