I have decided to go with the "beat the heck out of it with a hammer" approach

snapguide.com

It has the virtue of simplicity.

You can use software to wipe the drives, but this can take a long time to complete. The best bet is get a hammer and chisel and beat the living daylights of the drives, concentrate on the platters. Were eye protection as some have glass platters.

Another way is some electronic recycling facilities have hard drive shredders, they will completely destroy the drive into tiny bits of metal.

I would just open up the cases and remove the platters. Nobody is going to reconstruct an old hard drive.

I recently took my old computer to a local recycler. Being mildly concerned about security, I asked him about destroying the HD. He then removed it from the box and placed it between two very strong magnets. He said that should render it pretty inert, but then, as an additional precaution, he placed it on a steel plate and then beat the @#@%# out of it with an 8 lb sledge. I was satisfied.
