Allen,

Re: Your report on Nomai vs Zip disks.

I have had similar results in the tests I conducted on Nomai disks about 2 1/2 weeks ago, i.e. there were reallocated sectors. You are absolutely right that casual one time testing (write data/read it back) will NOT reveal these subtle differences. However, in prolonged dynamic testing to guage the MTBF (mean time between failures) or MTBE (mean time between errors) you will see significant differences between XHD and Zip. In fact, extrapolating from your results (as well as what I found earlier this month) I can safely conclude that using a Nomai XHD is very likely to invalidate your Zip drives' manufacturer's MTBF rating and also reduce usable lifetime.

In my opinion this could be a result of poor media integrity and a lax manufacturing process that allows significant parameter variation in their products.

Regards,

Kunal

"First results of my testing of Nomai disks"

Allen,

Thanks for the great job your doing with testing the nomai disks. Your results are very interesting and valuable. It will be interesting to see how that 2nd XHD disk performs. That is, if your zip drive lasts that long :-)

Allen, since your testing went as anticipated (at least as anticipated by Iomega), I have fulfilled my part of the bargain to help reimburse you. Did you get the $5 that I sent by e-mail? I put it in my floppy drive, it didn't come back out again, and my e-mail said some file ¯1€##$@Ýc(&oØ_‹.00 was attached so I figure it got out there. I just hope some server didn't change it from decimal to binary and devalue it.

BTW, I'm glad I had the presence of mind not to stick it in my Zip drive, because now every time I stick a disk in the floppy drive, it's demanding payment or it will not read it. I don't need that 70 times over.
