PARIS, Dec. 19 /PRNewswire/ via Individual Inc. -- The UMTS Alliance today welcomed the European Telecommunications Standards Institute's (ETSI) test vote which narrowed the choice for next generation Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) down to two strong contenders.
The test vote has clearly shown a preference for two major approaches allowing ETSI's full voting membership to now concentrate on a final vote. Also both proposal's have their merits, the UMTS Alliance is confident that the strengths, simplicity and commercial benefits of its solution can and will win the day.
The UMTS Alliance's TD-CDMA solution gained around 42 per cent of the votes cast this week, but more than one-third of ETSI's total voting potential did not take part in the test ballot.
The TD-CDMA solution proposed by the UMTS Alliance is the only one which can be deployed in all existing GSM networks - including the PCS networks in the USA, Europe, and the Asia-Pacific region. It also allows operators to make easier and faster re-use of their existing spectrum and deliver services to the marketplace in the shortest possible timescale. Furthermore, its clear position on patents and intellectual property rights is generating a lot of support from ETSI members.
Friedhelm Hillebrand, Chairman of the ETSI's technical working group confirmed the position to Reuters on Wednesday, 17th December 1997. He said, ''There was a test vote... but the necessary qualified majority of 71 per cent was not reached.''
The final selection of the UMTS air interface will be determined once the full ETSI membership has evaluated all the technical and commercial issues.
The UMTS Alliance consists of Alcatel, Bosch, Italtel, Motorola, Nortel, Siemens and Sony.
