GGersh it has all to do with Russian internal politics and current hardship.
The best solution like in Ukraine start a war and deflect the population attention from internal problems.

There is also an economic reason behind that - If Assad regime fails and a pro-western regime will arise then NG pipelines from the Persian Gulf / Arab Emirates will be build and undercut Europe dependence on Russian NG.

As to Israel I hope they will be smart enough not to enter the fray
