In N.Y. there was a full page ad for Sprint in the NY Times. At least I think it was Sprint; what mesmerized me was the huge picture of the Qualcomm phone in the ad; the Qualcomm name big as life and the only picture in the ad... I let the image shine upon me for almost a minute before, fully refreshed, I could stand to turn the page.

Kabbott- in no particular order: it's Qualcomm; One l.
WLL= wireless local loop. Using wireless telephony as the only phone system (correct me if I'm wrong, please)
TDMA is digital as well.(time division multiple access as opposed to code division)
GSM is Global Standard for Mobile

Qualcomm makes no money on phone calls, but off of infrastructure that they sell (the base stations, etc.), hand sets, ASIC sales, and royalties from others who sell hand sets and etc.

There's much more, but I'll let those more proficient than I to address those issues; or, you could just read old, excellent posts of Engineer,
Qdog, Valueman and numerous others.

CDMA (Code Division Multple Access) is indeed a technology newer and better than TDMA and its cousin GSM. CDMAone is a name adopted by the CDMA Development Group to apply to the one version of CDMA. You may see this version of CDMA referred to as IS-95. Qualcomm does now own any version of CDMA, however they have many patents covering aspects of IS-95 compatible equipment such that currently it is virtually impossible for a manufacturer to make such equipment without obtaining a license and payong royalties. In addition, QCOM makes CDMA infrastructure, handsets and asics (application specific integrated circuits). The only digital phones that use Qualcomm asics are those using IS-95 cdma. I do not know the structure of the qcom royalty arrangements.
