when you BTC, you are buying the stock back from someone else, to give those shares to a person whose shares you sold(without them knowing!). investors pay the ask price to obtain shares, correct? i am referring to those of us who buy shares on the open market.

from the other side of the issue, you are correct. when i sell, someone buys at that price BUT pays the premium (thus the ask). my point was all those shares short were not covered without a premium.
