Thanks for the comments D6.
To me the important question is how to build viable communities where people know and care about one another...

I work for myself from home so I go out of my way to create community. I have
  • A group of neighbors where we get season tickets to the small (90 seat) community theater. We have a party to eat before 5 shows a year.
  • Friends at two different sites I windsurf. They are different and I make an attempt to go to parties and events for the one that is most active and the other I communicate with friends via text and email before and after sailing to share thought about conditions, etc.
  • I make a big effort to be friendly with neighbors and I get invited to the block party around the corner that those with kids organize for their kids.
  • My girlfriend makes friends at our health club (24 hr fitness) so she has lunch once a week or so with friends from there
  • I keep in touch with friends I used to work with 18 years ago and have a lunch with one planned for tomorrow.

It takes work but it is rewarding. If I had more time or needed to meet more people, especially if I wanted to meet women, I'd do volunteer work as it is a great way to meet quality people.

How do you do this in a rural area? My guess is schools and churches are a center for many.
