Japan's PerfecTV Passes 500,000 Subscriber Mark
(Newsbytes; 12/19/97)

TOKYO, JAPAN, 1997 DEC 19 (NB) -- By Martyn Williams, Newsbytes. PerfecTV,
Japan's first digital multi-channel satellite television service, has passed
the 500,000 subscriber mark, the company has announced. Its half millionth
subscriber joined the service at 2pm on Wednesday.

PerfecTV launched in October 1996 and ended its first month with 64,000
subscribers. It passed 100,000 subscribers in early December 1996 and had a
quarter of a million viewers by the end of April this year. The company
currently carries 107 television channels on its service.

At the beginning of December, competition for PerfecTV in the digital satellite
broadcasting market began with the launch of DirecTV Japan. Early next year,
Japan Sky Broadcasting (JSkyB) is planning to launch its own competing service
to bring the number of operators to three.
