MORE BAD NEWS OUT OF JAPAN
(22-Dec-1997)

Bad debt is on the rise at Japan's banks and financial institutions. The finance ministry says total bad debt at Japan's city banks, trust banks and long-term credit banks rose marginally to 28 trillion yen, or about US$217 billion, in the fiscal half through September. The ministry blames the collapse of several construction firms and non-bank affiliates of Nippon Credit Bank.
